Memories, Travel Cape May June 19, 2019

Let me say this – Cape May, New Jersey far exceeded my expectations. It was a little Cape Cod with the salt ocean air and the colorful hydrangeas, a little Chautauqua Institute with he big Victorian homes and front porches.  It’s the oldest Seashore resort in the USA. We have an incredible country. Let’s never lose sight of this. 🇺🇸 If you have never been, there is something so wonderfully wholesome with trolley cars and carriage rides roaming through town. The front porch is the most important room in your home. It was a way t o show off your guests. You encourage visitors. This historic town has endured storms, a major fire, disrepair but has stood the test of time and is exquisitely beautiful. You can’t help but feel thankful to the fellow Americans who went before us and built this town with such thoughtful planning and left this seaside treasure for all of us to enjoy – Cape May. 🐚

Here are a few interesting things that I learned about Cape May.

  1. Due to a strong Nor’easter storms in 1962, the boardwalk was rebuilt with a cement walkway and is now referred to as a promenade. There are countless benches along the path. But please don’t call it the boardwalk – that is Atlantic City – in Cape May remember it’s the Promenade.
  2. The rest rooms in Cape May are called Comfort Stations. You will find them labeled Comfort Stations thought out the town.
  3. Cape May diamonds are little natural stone quartz crystals. These quartz pebbles become clear sparkling gems that are made into jewelry. People love their Cape May diamonds.
  4. One of the first pedestrian outdoor mall is called Washington Street Mall and it was built in 1971 under a lot of resistance. No one is resisting now the ice cream shops, delicious fudge, salt water taffy, darling clothes, and yummy chowder along with other food treats. How about an entire store devoted to peanut butter?
  5. You’ll find plentiful amounts of shingle style houses and B&B’s. Cape May has attracted visitors since the late 1700s. Restored Victorian Inns line the streets with beautiful gardens and Inn’s to stay at.

If you have never had the chance to visit Cape May, let me give you the nudge. How special this place is. After all, this land was made for me and you.

Sincerely, Trish
