Ponies, Boardwalk and Beach sum up Ocean City, Maryland in a nut shell. This was my first visit to Ocean City, Maryland and I didn’t know what to expect. It’s very close to the State of Delaware and it definitely has a summer vibe to it. The population grows exponentially during the summer months. Flip flops are the shoes of choice. The fishing is a big draw and I had no idea that OC was the White Marlin capital of the world.
If you are a fan of local food, you are in for a treat. Thrasher’s French fries, Dumsers and Kohr Ice Cream, Fisher and Dollies Popcorn, Candy Kitchen, and Dough Roller are very popular choices with the locals and everyone on vacation. Play miniature golf, walk the beach and without a doubt walk the boardwalk. Where else can you buy a hermit crab and salt water taffy?
Ocean City is known for white marlin fishing, surfing, golfing, and it’s the beach that draws a crowd .The beach and boardwalk are very well maintained. We visited in June of 2022 before the big crowds arrive.
But to me, the biggest draw is Assateague Island and seeing the wild ponies. I can’t describe the thrill that I had when I spotted the horses from a boat and on the road. What a unique and romantic sight to see. My enthusiasm went down when I learned that the mare horses are given contraceptions through a dart gun. That’s the way Maryland controls the pony population. In Chincoteague, Virginia horses are rounded up and auctioned off once a year to control population. I think I like that much better. The good news is that theses wild horses are well protected and have learned to live in the elements of the four seasons. There are pony police that keep people away from these wild horses, make sure they do not eat human food, and protect them for enjoyment for future generations.
I wish you many more adventures. Let us always remember the beauty of this world.
Sincerely,
Poodlewalker
