“I’ll just have a small slice.”
How often have you heard someone say “Ill just have a small slice” when you start slicing the cake? All the time. We just want a slice of cake to enjoy with a nice hot cup of coffee or tea or maybe even a glass of milk.
It’s impossible to leave a wedding reception until you have had a piece of the wedding cake. It’s the focal point. One of my favorite memories growing up was waiting for my parents to come home from a wedding and all wrapped up in a paper napkin would be a piece of the white wedding cake they brought home just for me. I was happy.
The highlight of every birthday party is always making a wish and blowing out of the candles on the birthday cake.
Every celebration is better with a cake. Even at my mom’s funeral luncheon we served a delicious lemon layer cake in her honor. Lemon cake was her favorite.
I started to realize the impact a little piece of cake can make this past Holiday season.
My friend was sent a cake from Pittsburgh, the “Burnt Almond Torte” from Prantl’s bakery. Little did I know that this delicious cake was so well know. It was voted the best cake in America by the Huffington Post, the “Best of Weddings Cakes” by the Knot in 2018, the “Best Cake In Pennsylvania” by the Food Network in 2018 and continues to be a Pittsburgh tradition today. Yes, it’s worth the trip to Pittsburgh for just a slice of this cake. It is a delicate white cake with a buttercream frosting. The whole thing is covered with sugary toasted thin almonds that’s not too sweet. I’m so thankful my friend decided to share with me just a slice of cake.
This last Christmas Eve, my husband came out of morning daily mass only to find a beautifully wrapped cake from Dessert Deli on his car. “Who would leave me such a prize?” he thought. I went on twitter and took a picture of the cake and said thank you anonymous! It didn’t take long for me to receive a message from a priest in the Southtowns requesting just one slice. At first I thought he was joking but when he added “if no one is able to answer the door please leave it on the bench outside the rectory” – I knew he was serious. Of course we followed though and gave him a couple slices of the amazing devils food chocolate cake with buttercream icing. He was most thankful.
Just the other day I decided to make Beatty’s Chocolate Cake from Barefoot Contessa complete with buttermilk and a cup of fresh brewed coffee. It didn’t take long for my 8 year old neighbor to come over and help me frost the cake and of course – sprinkle on a heavy dose of sprinkles.
Once you realize that you don’t need a special occasion to dig into a slice of cake, the second part of your life begins.
